When the Road Turns by Margot Russell

When the Road Turns Book

 ©2001 Margot Russell ISBN 1-55874-907-1

In 2001, Diane was privileged to be  included in an inspirational book  about  living with MS written by  people with  MS.  It was published  by Health  Communications, Inc.,  the  company  responsible for the  popular "Chicken  Soup for the  Soul" series.  This book  has  been  very positively received.  The  book  is universally regarded as inspirational  for all, whether or not you have multiple sclerosis.

When When the Road Turns was newly released, in 2001, Diane organized a book signing tour in the St. Louis area over a three-day period with the book's main author, Margot Russell, and another local author.  The third day was September 11.  When they met at Margot's motel on that day, she was watching the news.  This is how Diane found out what had happened, and the enormity of it would not be totally absorbed by her for several days.

Excerpts from Diane's chapter: I was bitten by the flying bug when I was 12 years old.  My father had just earned his pilot's license and on his first flight, he took the family up into the skies over Wisconsin.  Then I knew that I wanted to be a pilot and live my life in the air.

I happened to be in Washington, DC, with a friend when the nation's air traffic controllers went on strike.  We watched on television as President Ronald Reagan fired every striking controller.  "Why don't you apply?" my friend asked.  Why not, indeed?.

On Memorial Day, 1995, I woke up with a little numbness in my left knee.  I thought I'd slept on it wrong and waited for it to feel better.  Not only did it continue to feel numb, but two days later my legs felt sensitive to the touch.  So did my hair.  They decided to admit me to the hospital while they searched for the problem.  After eight days in the hospital, the neurologist said he was pretty sure that I had MS.

It wasn't much of a surprise when, shortly after, the Federal Aviation Administration sent me a certified letter telling me that I'd lost my medical certification, which meant that I could no longer work as a pilot or an air traffic controller.

This book is the first of its kind to share the real-life struggles and triumphs of those facing MS in one inspiring collection.

In their own compelling words, eighteen people with MS take you on a journey sharing their dreams, their emotional and physical battles, their struggle to accept the illness, and their courage to create new lives.  People like:

  • Israeli artist Inbal Tsur, who discovers a new way to paint after losing the use of her arms
  • renowned oceanographer Richard Radtke, who becomes the first disabled man to reach the South Pole
  • Diane Earhart who battles the FAA to keep her pilot's license
  • Julie Full-Lopez who is now enjoying life as a mother to a new baby despite doctors' advice not to further risk her health by becoming pregnant.
  • and 14 others from all walks of life who learn that they are not their diagnosis, but what they make of themselves in spite of it.

A few reviews and recommendations:

"A book that reminds us to hold tight to our dreams, When The Road Turns is an inspiring collection of stories written by people living with multiple sclerosis.  When you walk through the front door of these writers' lives, you won't leave without a renewed sense of hope and a new definition of courage."

--Montel Williams, entertainer, author, philantropist

"I was touched by the experiences of faith and hope that these writers express in dealing with MS.  I believe that it is not the disease, but the lack of hope that gets one down.  These stories champion success in dealing with MS and I am pleased to recommend it."

--Alan Osmond, entertainer, author, founder of One Heart

"This is a magnificent book! The strength of the human spirit is expressed in every story. The contributors embrace their challenges with the courage and hope that will inspire anyone who reads this book."

--Karen L. Rose, speaker, trainer, author, president of Blooming Rose Seminars

"Margot Russell has put together a much-needed book. I see the tremendous hope that lives within these words. I am personally encouraged."

--Joanne Wallace, speaker, author Starting Over and The Confident Woman
