MS Quilt" Many Steps ""MS Closer to a Cure" Quilt Fundraising/Awareness Project
Quilts are beautiful works of art that provide warmth and comfort as well as allowing people to unite together in making them. Like the now-famous AIDS quilts, this quilt was created to give a human face to multiple sclerosis, create a compelling sense of urgency about curing this disease, and serve as a dramatic way of expanding awareness about MS. It was created by people with MS, their family members, concerned friends, and health-care professionals to increase awareness of the disease, focus on hope and living positively with MS, and raise funds for research and services provided by the National MS Society. The quilt contains 25 panels, each created by someone touched by the disease who also donated $100 to the National MS Society. The quilt was assembled by Julie Spurgetis and quilted by the SBC Pioneers. The quilt was exhibited at educational and fundraising events, support groups, and MS Centers in 2004. The MS quilt project was supported by a grant from Serono, Inc. A booklet "MS Stories of Hope and Inspiration" of the stories celebrated in each panel accompanies the quilt. The stories are inspiring and heartfelt. Michelle Keating RN coordinated the entire project.
