NATCA
In 1981, the labor union representing air traffic
controllers made headlines when controllers staged an illegal strike
and President Reagan fired all striking controllers in hundreds of
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) facilities. In the years following, as
the system was rebuilt, it became apparent that labor representation
was needed. The majority of active air traffic controllers voted for a
new union and the National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) was
formed. In 1987 the Federal Labor Relations Authority (FLRA) certified
NATCA as the exclusive bargaining representative for the FAA air
traffic controllers who are responsible for ensuring the safety of the
flying public. NATCA is dedicated to preserving the strength and
stability of America 's air traffic control system.
Today, NATCA, a federal-sector labor union, and direct
affiliate of the AFL/CIO, represents more than 15,000 air traffic
controllers throughout the U.S. and its territories, along with 2,508
other bargaining-unit members, ranging from engineers and architects to
nurses and health care professionals.
Contact your members of Congress today (and every day) and
tell them jobs that ensure the public's safety need to remain
inherently governmental. Tell them to ensure that America 's air
traffic control system remains the safest in the world.
